Degree Overview:
The Graduate Certificate in Public Policy (GradCert Public Policy) is a full-time, 9-month program designed to provide students with a core set of modules that introduce general concepts and skills relevant to public policy making. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to address the challenges of increasingly complex client needs, growing expectations for service quality, and diminishing public spending.
Objectives:
The program aims to help students:
- Understand the political, ethical, social, and economic factors that influence policymaking, along with the challenges associated with effective policy implementation and regulation.
- Develop a critical appraisal and reflection on the role of the policy analyst within the democratic and policy-making process.
- Develop a critical view of policy analysis, recognizing the variety of considerations that shape policy outcomes and the variety of ideas, expectations, and norms that shape debates about appropriate policy solutions and the assessment of policy outcomes.
- Gain advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge of public policy and governance, developing their understanding of current debates within public policy and governance.
- Analyze public policies comparatively in an international, national, and subnational context and apply the gained knowledge in public policy research.
- Articulate concepts, knowledge, debates, and research to peers, specialists, and non-specialist audiences. Being aware of inter-disciplinary perspectives and consider evidence-based policy-making in the communication.
- Develop effective group and team-based approaches to learning, research, and presentation.
Other:
- The program is designed to provide a foundation for further specialization in certain public policy areas and further studies towards the Master of Public Policy.
- The program examines the socio-economic changes and political issues that influence policy making, the challenges associated with effective regulation and administration of public services, and ensuring that policy decisions are evidence-based.
