This 8-week online micro-credential explores the theories and challenges of representative democracy and provides participants with practical skills to lead and manage change in organizations. The course equips individuals for careers in senior government, policy, and public service roles.

Degree Overview:

This 8-week short course, delivered by the Institute of Local Government Studies (INLOGOV), explores the theories that influence representative democracy and the challenges in changing societies around the world. Upon completion, participants receive a University of Birmingham postgraduate micro-credential certificate (worth 10 academic credits) and a transcript. These credits can be applied for advanced entry to the University of Birmingham's full Online Masters of Public Administration (MPA) qualification.

Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Explain the theories underpinning representative democracy and traditional patterns of participation.
• Analyze and compare changing relationships between citizens and government in different contexts.
• Critically evaluate the crisis of democracy, the potential of the participatory turn, and the impact of different participatory practices.

Careers:

This short course equips participants with practical experience to further their careers, whether it's a move into a senior government or agency position or the development of an existing role in public service. It enables participants to master the core skills necessary to effect societal change and make a genuine impact on people's lives. After completing the course, participants will be well-positioned for a range of roles, including:

• Local councils

• Learners are fully registered University of Birmingham students and are entitled to normal University services (including library and IT resources).
• The course is 100% online, allowing participants to study around their existing commitments.

The cost to study this online course is £1,250 . This must be paid in full by card before enrolling.
