This interdisciplinary minor combines courses in sport management and conflict resolution, preparing students to work for organizations that utilize sports for social and peaceful purposes. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the sports industry, conflict analysis, and problem-solving techniques. The elective options allow students to specialize in areas such as cultural conflict, sport ethics, or international peacebuilding efforts.

Degree Overview:

This minor is designed to prepare students to work for organizations dedicated to using sports for development, community building and peace. It provides students with a cross section of courses in sport management and conflict resolution. Courses in sport management frame the sports industry in a philosophical, ethical, cultural and business context. Conflict resolution courses will introduce students to foundational concepts in the study of human conflict, the analysis of conflict and problem solving techniques for helping to resolve conflict. This is an interdisciplinary minor offered by the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution and the School of Sport, Recreation and Tourism Management.

Required Courses:

  • SPMT 201 Introduction to Sport Management (3 credits)
  • SPMT 307 Sport Diplomacy (3 credits)
  • CONF 101 Conflict and Our World (Mason Core) (3 credits)
  • CONF 300 Conflict Resolution Techniques and Practice (3 credits)

Elective Courses:

  • CONF 302 Culture, Identity, and Conflict (Mason Core) (3 credits) or CONF 435 Building Peace in Divided Societies
  • SPMT 302 Philosophical and Ethical Dimensions of Sport (3 credits) or SPMT 304 Sport, Culture, and Society

Other:

  • There has been a real growth in the establishment of non-profit organizations that use ‘sport for development’, sport to bring diverse communities together and also ‘sport for peace’ organizations in high conflict areas of the world.
  • This minor is available to all Mason undergraduate students.
  • Eight credits of coursework must be unique to the minor and students must complete all coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.00.
