Degree Overview:

The Asian Studies Honours Major at Murdoch University is a three-year program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the politics, history, societies, economies, media, and religions of the Asian region. The program emphasizes the importance of Asia in shaping the global future and aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate complex issues in Australian and Asian contexts.


Objectives:

  • To develop a deep understanding of the Asian region's history, politics, societies, economies, media, and religions.
  • To analyze and interpret representations of Asia and their significance.
  • To enhance research skills for evaluating diverse sources of knowledge and analyzing complex issues.
  • To improve communication skills for effectively conveying ideas and persuading others.
  • To develop project management skills for designing and managing sophisticated projects.
  • To cultivate cross-cultural skills for working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Outline:


Structure:

The program requires a total of 15 credit points. Students can choose between two options:

  • Honours Thesis (15cp): Students complete an Honours thesis under academic supervision.
  • Honours Thesis (12cp) and Coursework (3cp): Students complete an Honours thesis under academic supervision and relevant coursework.
  • A substitute for Specified Electives may be approved by the Supervisor and Honours Chair.

Modules:

  • AST5691/AST569: Honours Thesis in Asian Studies (15cp/12cp)
  • ART600: Special Project (3cp)
  • GRO501: Research Methods (3cp)

Teaching:

  • The program is taught by world-leading academics in anthropology, sociology, politics, language, history, development, and other disciplines.
  • Students have the opportunity to participate in in-country programs in Indonesia, Japan, and other locations, often supported by scholarships.
