The HDip Arts: Study of Religions is an intensive one-year full-time or two-year part-time course for graduates new to the study of religions. It offers research-informed teaching across various traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and East Asian religions. Students can choose from a wide range of modules, including a dissertation module. The program prepares students for careers in education, public sector, NGOs, healthcare, and more.

Degree Overview:

The HDip Arts: Study of Religions is an intensive one-year full-time or two-year part-time course designed for those who have a degree but have not previously studied religions at a degree level. It provides a research-informed approach to the study of various religious traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and East Asian religions. The program aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of religious traditions and methodologies in the academic, cross-cultural study of religions.


Outline:

The HDip Arts: Study of Religions consists of 60 credits, taken from a range of existing 2nd and 3rd Arts modules in the relevant subject. Students can choose from a variety of modules, including:

  • Authority and Community in Contemporary Christianities (10 credits)
  • Christianities in a Global Age (10 credits)
  • Hinduism and Indian Religions (10 credits)
  • Indigenous Religions (10 credits)
  • Islam: historical and contemporary perspectives (10 credits)
  • Korea's Religious and Philosophical Traditions (10 credits)
  • Sufism: charisma and devotion in Islam (10 credits)
  • Contemporary Religions in Ireland (10 credits)
  • Western Esotericism and New Religious Movements (10 credits)
  • Religions of East Asia (10 credits)
  • Buddhism in Practice (10 credits)
  • Religions and Gender (10 credits)
  • Dissertation in the Study of Religions: (10 credits) This module allows students to conduct supervised research in any area of interest, whether or not it has been covered in the HDip program.
  • Students can also take up to 10 credits of religion-related modules in other departments, such as Asian studies, folklore, sociology, history, philosophy, classics, and history of art. They can also study languages like Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include essays, presentations, in-class tests, learning journals, fieldwork research reports, and (in a small number of cases) exams.

The HDip in the Study of Religions is the only course in Ireland to offer research-informed teaching across traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and East Asian religions. The program's academic, non-theological approach to religions makes it suitable for students of all beliefs. The HDip program is recognized by the Teaching Council for teacher subject registration. Students wishing to satisfy Teaching Council requirements will take 60 credits of RG courses (selected in consultation with the Programme Coordinator) plus ED6319. HDip students can avail of study-abroad options through Erasmus (for Europe) and other exchange programs with UCC's partner universities in the USA, China, and Japan.
