The Design of Resilient Communities Graduate Certificate program is a 12-credit, 6-month program offered both on-campus and online at Jefferson's East Falls campus. It is a STEM-designated program (CIP Code 04.0902) and focuses on equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and approaches to guide organizations to thrive amidst environmental, social, and economic challenges. The program emphasizes the importance of adaptation to climate change and explores resilient design practices. Scholarships are available for eligible students.


Outline:

The program is structured across two semesters, Fall and Spring, with a total of 12 credits.


Fall Semester (6 credits):

  • Principles of Sustainable Design (3 Credits): This course delves into the concept of sustainability and its crucial role in the future of humanity.
  • Students learn to analyze and articulate the sustainability imperative across four dimensions: ecology, economy, experience, and equity. The course examines sustainability considerations at various scales in the built environment, from cities and regions to individual buildings and interiors.
  • Adaptive & Resilient Design (3 Credits): This hands-on course introduces the concept of adaptability in design.
  • It investigates adaptability at three scales: individual, site/building, and city. Topics covered include thermal comfort, adaptive opportunities, passive design, scenario planning, and resilience.

Spring Semester (6 credits):

  • Ecological Systems for Resilient Landscapes (2 Credits): This course encourages exploration and transcends disciplinary boundaries.
  • Students examine the landscape through various lenses, including architecture, landscape architecture, geography, and history. The course analyzes how culture influences human conceptions of landscape and the environment, the impact of humans on the environment, and the effect of the environment and landscape on humans.
  • Resilient Communities Design Studio (4 Credits): This studio-based course utilizes the stakeholder-driven integrated design process to generate regenerative and resilient design solutions for communities.
  • Students learn and apply regenerative principles as the basis of design.
