Students complete a core curriculum, breadth requirement, and dissertation, and must pass qualifying and general examinations. The program aims to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in academia, industry, or government.

• Breadth Requirement: Students must complete a breadth requirement, further described at https://www.math.lsu.edu/grad/PhD#coursework.
• Course Plan: Each student's academic course plan is developed in consultation with and approved by their advisory committee each semester.
• Credit Hours: Students must complete at least 54 semester hours of graduate credit.
• Qualifying Examination: Students must pass a PhD-qualifying examination, typically by the end of their second year.
• Oral General Examination: Students must pass an oral general examination conducted by their advisory committee, usually by the end of their third year.
• Dissertation: Students must write a dissertation and pass a final examination, which is primarily a dissertation defense.
