Students gain knowledge and skills in crime mapping, spatial analysis, GIS, remote sensing, and the ethical implications of using these technologies in criminal justice.

The Crime Mapping and Geospatial Intelligence Analytics Graduate Certificate is a 15-credit hour standalone certificate program. Students will gain knowledge and skills in areas such as crime mapping, spatial analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and the ethical implications of using these technologies in criminal justice.


Outline:

The program requires students to complete 15 credit hours, distributed as follows:

  • Theory (3 hours):
  • SOCL 4461 Criminology (3)
  • SOCL 7591 Seminar: Topics in Social Issues (3)
  • Methods (3-6 hours):
  • GEOG 4044 Computer Cartography (3)
  • GEOG 4047 Geographic Information Systems (3)
  • GEOG 4048 Methods of Spatial Analysis (3)
  • SOCL 4466 Crime Mapping (3) or GEOG 3043 Crime Mapping (3)
  • GEOG 7973 Advanced Geographic Information Systems (3)
  • GEOG 7975 Advanced Remote Sensing Seminar (3)
  • Applications (3-6 hours):
  • ANTH 4014 Forensic Anthropology (3)
  • GEOG 4043 Crime GIS (3) or SOCL 4467 Crime GIS (3)
  • GEOG 4046 Web GIS (3)
  • GEOG 4049 Geospatial Applications of Small Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (3)
  • SOCL 7213 Specialized Topics in Social Science Methods (2-3)
  • GEOG 7911 Selected Topics in Geography (3)
  • GEOG 7945 Socioeconomic Applications of GIS (3)
  • Ethics (3 hours):
  • SOCL 7901 Independent Reading (3) or GEOG 7911 Selected Topics in Geography (3)
  • The program also requires students to complete a minimum of 7.5 credit hours in courses at or above the 7000-level.

Other:

  • At least one-half of the minimum required coursework credit must be in courses at or above the 7000-level.
  • Students should select SOCL 7901/GEOG 7911 when registering in sociology and GEOG 7911/SOCL 7901 when registering in G&A for the ethics course.
  • The ethics course (SOCL 7901/GEOG 7911) covers topics related to ethical concerns in geospatial technology applications, geospatial privacy issues, and other relevant topics.
  • This is addressed through discussions, selected readings, and guest speaker presentations.
