Degree Overview:

The program focuses on the inner workings of government at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels, covering topics such as public ethics, policy formulation, government and public sector structures, leadership, and management. Students will develop critical thinking, analytical communication, and problem-solving abilities to pursue a career as a public servant. The optional co-op stream provides students with valuable real-world experience through a co-op work term.

Outline:

Fall Term

• Introduction to Public Service
Explore the principles, values, and ethics of public service in Canada.
• Government and Public Sector Structures
Examine the different levels of government in Canada and their respective roles and responsibilities.
• Policy Formulation and Analysis
• Public Sector Management and Leadership
Develop the skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage and lead in the public sector.

Winter Term

• Public Finance and Budgeting
• Human Resources Management in the Public Sector
Explore the unique challenges and considerations of human resource management in the public sector.
• Public Procurement and Contracting
• Program Evaluation and Performance Measurement
Develop the skills to evaluate public sector programs and measure their effectiveness.

Optional Co-op Work Term:

Students in the co-op stream will participate in a paid work term in a relevant public sector organization, gaining valuable practical experience and applying the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom.
