Entry Requirements:


Academic Entry Requirements:

  • 2:1 degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Geoscience, Physical Geography, or Earth Sciences.
  • Relevant coursework: Experience in the form of a dissertation, undergraduate mapping, or research project is expected.

English Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • IELTS Academic module (not General Training): Overall score of 6.5 with no subtest below 6.0.
  • TOEFL ibt, mybest, or athome): Overall score of 79; Reading 13; Listening 12; Speaking 18; Writing 21.
  • Pearsons PTE Academic: Overall score of 59 with minimum 59 in all subtests.
  • Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): Overall score of 176, no subtest less than 169.
  • Oxford English Test: Overall score of Oxford ELLT 7; R&L: OIDI level no less than 6 with Reading: 21-24, Listening: 15-17; W&S: OIDI level no less than 6.
  • Trinity College Tests: Integrated Skills in English II & III & IV: ISEII Distinction with Distinction in all sub-tests.
  • University of Glasgow Pre-sessional courses: Tests are accepted for 2 years following date of successful completion.
  • Degree from a majority-English speaking country: Students must have studied for a minimum of 2 years at the undergraduate level, or 9 months at the Master's level, and must have completed their degree in that majority-English speaking country within the last 6 years.
  • Applicants should submit a one-page research proposal outlining the proposed research subject.
  • Applicants must submit transcripts/degree certificate, two references, a CV, and the name of a potential supervisor.
  • For international students: UKVI Secure English Language Tests (SELT) are accepted, but any of the listed English tests are also acceptable for admission.
  • Fee status and policies: Irish nationals residing in the Common Travel Area of the UK, EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status, and Internationals with Indefinite Leave to remain status may qualify for home fee status.

Other Entry Requirements:

  • Bench fees may be required for some research projects.
