Degree Overview

Program Objectives:

• Develop students' ability to perform original research in data-driven methods for solving major societal problems.
• Enhance students' ability to identify research needs and adapt existing methods or create new ones.
• Provide rigorous education and research experiences.

Program Description:

• Focuses on fundamental and applied research.
• Offers a foundational core in database management, information assurance, statistical learning and theory.
• Allows students to specialize in either data analytics or data engineering.
• Culminates in the production of a dissertation.

Outline

Program Structure:

• Required Core (12 credit hours): CSE 511, CSE 543, CSE 572/IEE 520/EEE 549, IEE 670/STP 502/EEE 554.
• Electives and Additional Research (39 credit hours): 12 hours research, 9 hours data engineering/analytics coursework, 12 hours electives.
• Data engineering or data analytics specialization options.

Assessment

• Qualifying exams covering required core courses within one year of matriculation.
• Dissertation prospectus and oral defense within one year following completion of 60th credit hour and fourth year in the program.
• 12 credit hours of DSE 792 Research required, with a maximum of 24 allowed.
