Program Overview

The Erasmus+-funded Master of Science in Sustainable Management of Fisheries and Aquaculture provides solutions to challenges facing the aquatic production sectors through innovative research and management practices. It equips students with knowledge in fish biology, statistics, aquaculture systems, and sustainable fisheries management, preparing them for careers in government agencies, research institutes, and private companies. The program is a collaboration between four European and four Egyptian universities, offering a globally recognized degree upon completion.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Master of Science Degree in Sustainable Management of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SMFA), funded by the EU (Erasmus+), is a program designed to contribute to the development of scientific research in aquatic resources based on sustainable management principles. It aims to provide solutions to problems facing aquatic production sectors in both capture fisheries and aquaculture, and to direct innovation towards developing these sectors and optimizing the use of aquatic resources. The program was initiated by European and Egyptian universities to create a joint master's degree focusing on knowledge exchange in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management in the Mediterranean region (FishAqu project under Erasmus+ KA2). Its mission is to qualify specialized personnel in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management, enabling them to compete locally and regionally by creating a supportive university environment to serve the community based on sustainable development plans. Objectives include establishing the M.Sc. program within the FishAqu-Erasmus+ project, fostering scientific cooperation between EU and Egyptian universities, allowing students to benefit from training across different universities, facilitating staff exchange, developing the curriculum, teaching modern technologies in aquatic production, increasing interest in aquaculture, qualifying personnel for companies and institutions, enabling graduates to plan and implement development projects, linking scientific research to applied fields, and contributing to studies addressing challenges in fisheries and aquaculture.

Outline:

The program is structured across four terms (semesters). The course schedule and individual modules are as follows:

Term 1:

  • SMFA 601: Applied Fish Biology
  • SMFA 603: Applied Statistics in Fisheries and Aquaculture
  • SMFA 605: Aquaculture Nutrition and Production

Term 2:

  • SMFA 602: Fishery Analysis and Stock Assessment
  • SMFA 604: Aquaculture Systems and Engineering
  • SMFA 606: Sustainable Fisheries Management

Term 3:

  • SMFA 607: Transferable Competences in Fisheries and Aquaculture
  • SMFA 615: Thesis I

Term 4:

  • SMFA 616: Thesis II
  • A detailed matrix outlining the knowledge and skills covered in each course is provided, linking specific learning outcomes to individual courses. For example, "Applied Fish Biology" covers learning outcomes A1.1, A1.2, A1.3, B1.2, C3.1, and D2.2. This matrix comprehensively details the knowledge, understanding, skills (intellectual, professional/practical, and general/transferable) gained in each course. The program description also lists intended learning outcomes (ILOs) categorized into general competences and detailed competences across knowledge, intellectual skills, professional and practical skills, and general and transferable skills.

Careers:

Graduates of the MSc in Sustainable Management of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences will be eligible to work in various locations, including:

  • Governmental and regional entities managing fisheries and aquaculture activities.
  • Research institutes developing the sector through sustainable management.
  • Private and national aquaculture projects.
  • Designing and developing capture fisheries management plans.
  • Companies and factories serving the sector (fish feed, nets, processing).

Other:

The program is accredited by the Supreme Council of Egyptian Universities (SCU) ZEvA - Central Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation. The program's duration is four terms, and it awards a Master's degree in the Maritime area of study. The total credit hours are 40.00.
