Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Oxford and Cambridge Summer School offers a Science, Innovation, and Technology (SIT) summer program for 16-19-year-olds. This interdisciplinary program investigates the interplay between society and math-related STEM disciplines. The program aims to provide exceptional learning experiences led by alumni from Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London. It encourages exploration through interdisciplinary perspectives to foster a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted interactions within science and technology. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills to engage with complex challenges in a constantly evolving world. The program is designed to provide knowledge in a chosen field of study while also broadening horizons through an interdisciplinary approach. Students choose at least 3 core modules from a list including Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Economics, Management, Entrepreneurship, Law, Philosophy, Politics, International Relations, Medicine, Biology, and Chemistry, and Psychology. They may also choose 1 or 2 additional modules from other streams. The program is a fully immersive two-week residential experience in Oxford or Cambridge colleges.

Outline:

The SIT stream (Stream A) offers core modules in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, and Computer Science. Additional modules available for selection include Business, Economics, Management, Entrepreneurship, Law, Philosophy, Politics, International Relations, Medicine, Biology, and Chemistry, and Psychology. Students choose at least three core modules and can select one or two additional modules from other streams. The program includes a variety of topics within each module:

  • Mathematics: Quantum mechanics, statistics, vector calculus, and the use and abuse of statistics.
  • Emphasis is placed on individual and group problem-solving.
  • Engineering: Thermodynamics, the power of machines, aerodynamics, data science, AI, and sustainability.
  • The program highlights the multidisciplinary nature of engineering.
  • Computer Science: Software development, data structures, and algorithms.
  • The program notes the growing importance of computer science, especially in AI.
  • Physics: Topics include the twins’ paradox (general relativity), seismology, and black holes.
  • The program emphasizes a higher level of study compared to school-level physics. A sample schedule shows a day divided into sessions with various topics, including data science, geophysics, seismology, mechanical engineering, space-time and curvature, the twins paradox, electrification of cars, mathematics, physics, aerodynamics, astrophysics, AI and sustainability, and a UCAS roundtable. The schedule also includes tutorials and keynote lectures.

Teaching:

The program utilizes Oxford and Cambridge's teaching methods, including tutorials (small group discussions with tutors, limited to six students) and seminars (larger group discussions guided by an expert tutor, typically 10-12 students per stream). Lectures (keynote lectures featuring leading experts) are also included. Pre-reading is assigned for seminars. The program emphasizes independent thinking and critical analysis. The tutors are alumni from Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London, with expertise in various fields.

Other:

The program offers a chance to experience Oxbridge life, build a global network with like-minded students, and discover passions through interdisciplinary subjects. The program includes college accommodation, full board, all tutoring, trips/extracurricular activities, transportation to and from the UK, transfers within the UK, and pocket money. The program cost does not include a non-refundable deposit (£500) and the program cost (£5850). Student testimonials are included, highlighting the positive experience. The program is offered in both Oxford and Cambridge, each location highlighting its strengths in specific academic areas.
