Degree Overview:
This BTEC Level 1 Introductory Award in Digital Media is a new qualification designed in response to learner feedback. Its objective is to introduce students to Digital Media and to develop their learning skills for progression to further learning, an apprenticeship, or employment. The program is motivating and includes a vocational qualification, a City & Guilds Employability and Personal Development Award, English and Maths components, a tutorial program, and work experience. It aims to prepare students for their next steps by including a mandatory unit on developing a personal progression plan.
Outline:
The course is based on a Programme of Study consisting of:
- The Vocational Qualification itself (Edexcel BTEC Introductory Award in Digital Media)
- A City & Guilds Employability and Personal Development Award
- English and Maths (included if students haven't achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above)
- A Tutorial programme
- Work Experience (30 hours) Students work with the National Citizens Service (NCS) program to develop employment skills. Learners study three core Employability units and one sector-specific unit. The sector-specific unit allows learners to plan for their next steps. The course uses various teaching methods: lectures, online modules (Moodle), group work, electronic resources, and external speakers. Sample modules covered in Digital Media include:
- Storyboards
- Layouts and Interactive Presentations
- Producing Adverts and Animations
- Audio and Filmmaking
- Editing and Sharing Media
Assessment:
Assessment is through a range of methods including coursework, assignments, and presentations.
Teaching:
Teaching methods include lectures, online modules (Moodle), group work, electronic resources, and external speakers.
Careers:
Successful completion can lead to a career in a Digital Media-related area. It allows progression to further learning, an apprenticeship, or employment.
Other:
The course is a Level 1, full-time, one-academic-year program starting in September 2025, located in the David Hockney Building. For Level 1 entry, a keen interest in Digital Media and a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or E or above are required, or Entry level 3 qualifications with minimum Entry 3 in Maths and English. The course includes 30 hours of relevant work experience.
