These aims are embedded within the program's and module's Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs). The program is distinctive for its science-based approach (as opposed to arts), emphasizing analytical methods using mathematics, statistics, econometrics, and econometric modeling. It also features a thematic approach across five concentrations (Behavioral and Experimental Economics, Business Economics, Economic Development and Sustainability, Financial Economics, and Political Economy of the Middle East), each with a Subject Leader ensuring consistency across modules. A dedicated Research Methods module prepares students for their Honours Dissertation.


Outline:

The BSc (Hons) in Economics is a four-year program (Preparatory Year + three-year degree). Each year comprises 120 credits taught across two 15-week semesters (week 13 is revision, weeks 14-15 are assessment). Students choose optional modules in Levels 5 and 6 to specialize in one or more of the five concentrations or pursue a general economics track.

Concentrations:

Students choose optional modules to specialize in one or more of five concentrations: Behavioral and Experimental Economics (B&EE), Business Economics (BE), Economic Development and Sustainability (ED&S), Financial Economics (FE), and Political Economy of the Middle East (PEME). Each concentration has obligatory modules.


Assessment:

Assessment methods vary by module but generally include: examinations (closed book), coursework (essays, short answer questions, multiple-choice tests, presentations, case studies, short projects, group work), and a final-year Honours Dissertation or Graduation Project. Weightings between coursework and examinations vary by year:

  • Preparatory Year: 50% coursework, 50% examination
  • Year 1: 50% coursework, 50% examination
  • Year 2: 40% coursework, 60% examination
  • Year 3: 40% coursework, 60% examination
  • Some modules are entirely coursework-based (listed in section 10). The Honours Dissertation and Graduation Project are assessed using a standardized marking criteria pro-forma. Double marking is used for assessments worth 20% or more of the module mark. The Faculty Council may decide to use hybrid teaching (60% face-to-face, 40% remote) or electronic examination methods, subject to University approval.

Teaching:

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, seminars, computer-based laboratory workshops, group work, web-based guided study, presentations, blended learning exercises, independent research, and guided independent study. Feedback is provided through various means, including projects, coursework, lectures, tutorials, presentations, seminars, workshops, web-based activities, and one-on-one contact with staff. The program utilizes a Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (LTA) strategy aligned with the University's LTA strategy, promoting creativity, innovation, and flexibility in teaching, learning, and assessment. The program emphasizes deep learning through active student engagement and higher-level learning outcomes. A Programme Management Team (Programme Director, Subject Leaders, Module Leaders) provides academic support. The e-learning platform facilitates peer support and interaction.


Careers:

The program aims to enhance students' employability skills for careers in various sectors, both in Egypt and internationally. The program's structure and specializations are designed to prepare graduates for postgraduate studies and careers in academia or research. The program's emphasis on analytical skills, quantitative methods, and economic policy analysis makes graduates competitive in the graduate labor market. Four weeks of summer internships and completion of a certified database course are required for graduation.

The program includes a compulsory attendance policy and a requirement to pass exams for progression. Student feedback is collected using a Coursework Submission form for assessments worth 20% or more of the module mark. Personal tutors are assigned to monitor student progress. Staff development includes peer observation and the creation of personal development plans. Appendix B maps program outcomes to modules. Appendix C details the assessment matrix. The program has a migration strategy for students enrolled in previous program versions. Each 10-credit module involves 100 hours of student effort, and each 20-credit module involves 200 hours. Each academic year totals 1200 hours of student effort.
