Program Overview

The Waste Management program, offered through distance learning, provides a comprehensive understanding of solid waste management, emphasizing preventive and corrective techniques to minimize pollution. It includes six subjects covering various waste types and environmental considerations, and prepares graduates for careers in waste management, including roles in municipalities, environmental consulting, and teaching. Scholarships are available for eligible applicants.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Waste Management program addresses the pressing issue of solid waste management, focusing on proper treatment to preserve the environment. It offers a practical approach, presenting relevant issues with current examples and emphasizing preventive and corrective techniques to reduce pollution and environmental impact. The program is designed for two groups: individuals without degrees seeking quality education and university graduates wanting specialized practice in waste management to enhance career prospects. Successful completion leads to a Specialization in Waste Management degree awarded by the enrolling university. The general objective is to understand the basic knowledge needed for successful waste management, from minimization and segregation to complex treatments and recovery methods. Specific objectives include gaining knowledge of good practices in solid waste management (destructive techniques, recovery, reuse, recycling, and controlled disposal); formalizing relevant aspects of residue management to implement assessment and minimization programs; understanding the responsibilities of involved agents (producers, transporters, managers, administrators); evaluating the environmental impact and energy consumption associated with waste generation; describing waste classification; understanding by-product trade; and learning current norms and legislative trends applicable to waste in all environments.

Outline:

The Waste Management program consists of 30 credits and takes 6-9 months to complete, depending on student dedication. The program structure includes six subjects: The subjects are independent but structured in a pedagogical sequence from least to most complex.

Teaching:

The program is distance learning, with no set start date. Students can enroll at any time, subject to availability. The program director is Dr. Eduardo García Villena, Director of the Environmental Area at UNINI. A substantial list of professors and authors from various universities and institutions are listed, including Dr. Ángel M. Álvarez Larena, Dr. Roberto M. Álvarez, Dr. Óscar Arizpe Covarrubias, and many others.

Careers:

Career opportunities after completing the Waste Management program include:

  • Compost plant and transfer station operator.
  • Work in the management and control of dumping sites.
  • Environmental waste consultant.
  • Applicants submit applications online, and a committee evaluates suitability for financial aid. The program emphasizes a global vision of waste management through multidisciplinary topics.
