The Executive Master in Sceneggiatura (Screenwriting) leverages IULM University's experience in training entertainment industry professionals. Outline:
The program is structured into three parts:
- FIRST PART (HEAD): Theory: This section covers prolegomena of screenwriting; structural models; genres; and script analysis.
- SECOND PART (BELLY): Technique: This section focuses on the practical aspects of screenwriting, including: the process from subject to treatment and script; creating a compelling incipit; writing with images (showing, not telling); rewriting exercises; using screenwriting software (e.g., Final Draft); understanding language elements like scene headers, action lines, and dialogue; the concepts of expressible and inexpressible; economy of selection; developing a LOGLINE and OUTLINE; character development; recognizing explanation as a failure of dramatization; conflict and resolution; and achieving closure.
- PART THREE (LEGS): Practice: This section covers the editing process, clarity, script formatting, and networking within the film industry. The program lasts 4 months and is full-time.
