About
The department offers a program that commences with a course in local anesthesia and exodontia, whereby students are equipped with the appropriate knowledge and practical skills to safely administer local anesthetics and carry out extraction of teeth. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge in the principles and technical aspects of surgery, as well as the integration of basic sciences to form the appropriate technical basis for the clinical practice of surgery.Mission
- To educate and train students in administering local anesthesia for different dental and oral surgery procedures
- Introduce students to the basic principles and techniques in oral and maxillofacial surgery
- Enable students to have intellectual and clinical skills in basic, complicated exodontias, and in minor oral surgical procedures, based on an outpatient clientele
- Educate students in the basic principles of sterilization, disinfection, and antisepsis
- Allow students to gain clinical experience in the physical examination of patients who require minor oral surgery procedures
- Educate students in basic life support and the management of medical emergencies in dental practice
- To educate students in the principles of conscious sedation and general anesthesia
- Familiarize students with the procedures most commonly provided by oral and maxillofacial surgeons
- Educate students on medico-legal implications, the appropriate use of professional ethics, attitudes, communication, and problem solving skills.

- Consider and recommend the appropriate referral of patients for specialist advice, or treatment
- Assess the moral and ethical responsibilities involved in the provision of care to individual patients, including to those with special needs, and to members of diverse and vulnerable communities
- Consider appropriately patients' rights, particularly with regard to confidentiality and valid consent, and of patients' obligations
- Relate the advantages and disadvantages of relevant treatment plans with patients
- Interpret clinical laboratory data and special investigations to help formulate a proper diagnosis and treatment plan
- Consider the relationship between oral health problems, nutrition, general health, drugs, and diseases that have impacted on dental care
- Appraise lifelong learning, self- assessment, and professional development
- Communicate and appraise clinical problems and treatment plans with other specialties involved in the treatment of patients
Professional and practical skills
- Correctly perform an appropriate physical examination, including intraoral, and head, and neck examination
- Properly prepare the armamentarium and the treatment environment for minor oral surgery procedures
- Properly collect and record personal data, medical history, and vital signs
- Properly execute infection control, and asepsis standards
- Properly obtain an informed consent where necessary through the intermediate consent of a parent, or a guardian
- Properly prepare and drape a patient for a minor oral surgical procedure
- Properly write a referral letter
- Distinguish between surgically clean and sterile surgical fields
- Properly perform pre-anesthetic evaluation and premedication
- Properly administer infiltration and block local anesthesia
- Properly perform exodontia and basic minor oral surgery procedures including proper suturing technique
- Give postoperative instructions to the patient
- Write appropriate prescription of drugs and monitor their effectiveness and saengineeringy particularly in the management of fear and anxiety
- Properly manage medical emergencies that may arise in the outpatient clinic
- Properly perform and execute basic life support
- Perform a clinical examination of the maxillary sinus
- Properly manage an acute and chronic odontogenic infections within the context of the general dentist
- Describe biopsy procedures as incorporated into general practice
- Properly inspect and examine maxillofacial trauma patients.
