Program Overview


Graduates will possess the skills to oversee curriculum development, guide students, manage budgets, and promote their institutions.

Program Outline

It is designed for educators who want to lead in their own classroom and beyond, whether it be within the school, school district or broader educational community. The program focuses on improving curriculum through strategic policy, enhancing the professional development of fellow teachers, and driving education forward.


Objectives:

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Examine educational leadership theories in relation to the K-12 school environment and society at large.
  • Demonstrate the ability to act on ethical issues inherent to teaching, learning and curriculum policy.
  • Develop leadership strategies to create an environment conducive to learning.

Outline:

The program consists of 10 courses, each lasting 11 weeks. The number of courses taken at a time will determine the overall program length.


Sample Courses:

  • EDU 505 - Contemporary Issues in Education: This course examines contemporary issues impacting schools and the American education system by analyzing the evolving relationship among schools, communities, states, and national education goals and initiatives.
  • EDU 520 - Education and the Law: This course explores the intersection of law and teaching, improving curriculum through strategic policy, and leadership in areas of teacher responsibility, such as instruction and professional development.
  • EDU 541 - Technology Tools to Manage Learning: This course develops skills to evaluate and use a Learning Management System (LMS) in a business or academic environment.
  • Topics include synchronous and asynchronous e-learning methods; capabilities, benefits and constraints of LMS; organizational needs; and methods of communication available in the system.
  • EDU 558 - Seminar in Teacher Leadership: This course explores the emerging role of teachers as leaders in K-12 educational environments.
  • It discusses teacher leadership in a variety of capacities for instruction, school reform, curriculum development, assessment, school finance and budgetary input, classroom management, collaboration and community building, technology integration, and professional and staff development.
  • EDU 564 - Curriculum Policy and Leadership: This course examines the development and implementation of administrative policy and practices at the local, state and national levels.
  • It develops critical skills required to systematically analyze, plan and make data-driven decisions and policies that foster the instructional improvement and organizational change necessary to support instruction.
  • EDU 599 - Education Capstone: This course is taken last or next to last and requires a grade of B or higher.
  • It applies the rationale for and methods of developing a professional portfolio. However, it is stated that the class size varies based on course objectives and the teaching demands of the subject matter. Students who complete this concentration will be prepared to:
  • Oversee, coordinate and assess employee performance including support staff involved in managing academic institutions, departments or alumni organizations.
  • Guide students when choosing their program, making progress toward graduation and deciding their career paths.
  • Manage and plan budgets, upkeep financial records and create financial reports.
  • Set operational policies and protocols and adjust as needed based on analysis of operations and other research data.
  • Support faculty and staff with various tasks like teaching courses, running orientation programs, distributing transcripts and planning events.
  • Attend community, state and national events or meetings to help promote your institution.
  • Engage in faculty and college committee activities.
  • Assist in hiring faculty and review their performance.
  • Work with regulatory and licensing agencies to ensure your institution complies with the relevant standards.
  • Coordinate course schedules, teaching assignments and room assignments to make effective use of buildings and equipment.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to develop admission requirements and course credit policies.

  • The program is currently not approved for federal financial aid by the U.S. Department of Education (ED).
