Program Overview


This online module allows students to delve into two or more topics related to children's language and communication impairments, such as autism, dyslexia, and language disorders. Students will critically evaluate theories, research findings, and the implications for practice, applying their knowledge to their work with children with SEN. The module offers flexible study options and is delivered through guided independent study, online discussion boards, and an optional one-day study block.

Degree Overview:

This module allows students to select two or more topics in the field of children’s language and communication impairments for more detailed study. Theoretical perspectives and research findings within each topic are evaluated. Implications for practice are explored.


Objectives:

By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate informed knowledge and understanding of one or two of the topics selected.
  • Discuss the impact of a specific condition(s) on children’s learning.
  • Critically evaluate theoretical perspectives in the topic(s) selected.
  • Critically analyse research findings in the topic(s) selected.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of a specific condition(s) to their practice.

Outline:


Content:

  • Topics may include the following: autism and autistic spectrum disorders, persisting speech difficulties, dyslexia, literacy: special topics, developmental language disorder (specific language impairment), language and behaviour, language and the environment, language and communication in adolescence, language and communication in early years, language and communication in multi-lingual contexts.

Structure:

  • The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library.
  • Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email. The assessment can be submitted either in June or September. This 15 credit module should take about 150 hours to complete (including preparation for the assignment).

Assessment:

  • A 3,000-word assignment.

  • The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library.
  • Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email.
