Architecture and Landscape BA Program Details:

Degree Overview:

This program is a unique three-year honors degree that offers students the opportunity to gain two professional qualifications: in architecture and landscape architecture. It is the first integrated degree of its kind in the world, accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Landscape Institute (LI), and the Architects Registration Board (ARB). The program aims to explore the integrated design of buildings and the wider landscape environment, preparing graduates for careers as leading architects, landscape architects, or urban designers. It emphasizes a holistic and critical understanding of the built environment.

Outline:

The program is structured around studio-based design projects, supported by lectures, seminars, field trips, and workshops.

Year 1:

  • Core Modules:
  • Introductory Environmental Design Studio:
  • Introduces students to architectural and landscape design in a studio context through short design projects. Covers methods of representation, including model-making, technical drawing, and sketching.
  • Architectural Design (Landscape) 2: Focuses on practical architectural design work, widening perception of architecture, introducing cultural and technological significance, and generating solutions to design problems.
  • The Dynamic Landscape: Develops landscape design skills and knowledge through studio-based work, field trips, and visits.
  • Covers site analysis, design development, and presentation.
  • Humanities 1 & 2: Explores the relationship between architecture, the built environment, and society, examining how humans have approached shelter and inhabitation across time and cultures.
  • Introduces histories and theories of architecture, emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Reading the Designed Landscape: Introduces students to the full scope of landscape architecture and the role of landscape architects in addressing contemporary social and environmental issues.

Year 2:

  • Core Modules:
  • Architectural Design (LSC) 3 & 4:
  • Builds on the first-year design studio, increasing the scale of projects and focusing on sustainability, the relationship of buildings to their urban context, and the design of outside spaces.
  • Urban Ecological Planting Design: Focuses on designing with plants in urban environments, emphasizing natural processes and the interrelationship between planting and landscape components.
  • Cultural Studies - urban landscape: Explores the history, forms, and meaning of urban environments, providing inspiration and motivation for design activities in cities.
  • Humanities 4: Covers a wide-ranging cultural and political history of architecture, its relationship to society, urban culture, institutions, and the growth of knowledge and ideas.
  • Materials of Landscape - Construction Design: Introduces different approaches to designing and detailing landscape structures, covering construction materials and sustainable design.

Year 3:

  • Core Modules:
  • Architectural Design (Landscape) 5 & 6:
  • Builds on previous design studios, focusing on the integration of knowledge gained throughout the course, the importance of physical context, and the relationship between architectural and landscape design.
  • Advanced Planting Design: Develops understanding of plant selection, establishment, and management on landscape sites, building on the knowledge gained in Year 2.
  • Environment and Technology 5 (LSC): Presents principles of human comfort, human experience, architectural spatial qualities regarding lighting, daylighting, and thermal perception, and passive heating, cooling, and ventilation of buildings.
  • Humanities 5: Focuses on urban history and theory, integrating architecture and related issues with a wider urban context.
  • Landscape Construction Design: Develops knowledge and skills in detailed construction design, focusing on materials and assembly.

Assessment:

Students are assessed through both group and individual coursework, which may include design portfolios, written reports, or presentations. Feedback is provided via individual and group tutorials and studio-based design reviews.

Teaching:

The program adopts a model of architectural education that focuses primarily on the design studio, supported by lectures, seminars, field trips, and workshops. Students are guided by academic tutors and practicing architects who bring their expertise to projects.

Careers:

Graduates of this program are highly employable and find careers in various fields related to the built environment, including:

  • Architectural Practice: Working in architectural firms, often after completing a two-year MArch in Architecture.
  • Built Environment Consulting: Providing expertise in areas such as sustainability, urban planning, and design.
  • Government and Local Authority Advising: Contributing to policy development and implementation.
  • Creative and Strategic Policy Making: Shaping the future of the built environment.
