Degree Overview:
The Foundation to Human and Animal Health Professions (Diagnostic Radiography) (Year 0) is a one-year foundation program designed for mature students who have been out of formal education for some time or have non-traditional qualifications. It serves as a pathway to the Diagnostic Radiography BSc program. The program is specifically targeted at Home/EU mature and non-traditional students who have typically taken a break from studies.

Outline:
Year Zero:
It is delivered through a blended approach with small group e-lectures, e-tutorials, and on-site support tutorials and laboratory sessions. Assessment is through continuous coursework based on practical laboratory skills and an end-of-semester multiple-choice examination.
- BIOLOGY FOR HEALTH STUDIES 2 (HEAL002): Building on HEAL001, this module explores more complex physiological processes in mammals and introduces aspects of gross mammalian anatomy. It is delivered through a blended approach with face-to-face and online components. Assessment is through coursework and an end-of-semester written examination.
- MATHS FOR HEALTH STUDIES 1 (HEAL003): This module introduces basic mathematical concepts used in other modules. It is delivered face-to-face or through a blended approach with lectures, e-lectures, and on-site tutorials. Assessment is through a one-hour unseen written paper.
- MATHS FOR HEALTH STUDIES 2 (HEAL004): This module builds on HEAL003 and introduces additional mathematical concepts. It is delivered face-to-face or through a blended approach. Assessment is through an unseen written examination paper. It also supports the development of study skills. Assessment is through a reflective portfolio and an assessed presentation.
- APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY FOR HEALTH STUDIES (HEAL006): This module explores key psychological aspects related to human thought and behavior. It is delivered face-to-face or through a blended approach. Assessment is through coursework and an end-of-semester written examination. It is delivered through a range of methods including lectures, tutorials, and group work. Assessment is through coursework and a presentation.
Teaching:
- Learning is promoted through a variety of activities, including team-based learning, interactive lectures, student-led seminars, problem-based learning, and collaborative projects.
- Shared lectures and tutorials with students from other directorates within the School of Health Sciences promote inter-professional education and learning opportunities.
Assessment:
- Assessment methods include seen and unseen written examinations, essay assignments, multiple-choice questions, case study presentations, video analysis, and interactive practical examinations.
- Assessment of the work-based learning element is an important aspect, requiring students to communicate effectively, analyze and evaluate their practice, and extend the research and evidence base of their chosen profession.
Careers:
- Upon graduation, students are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Graduates can explore careers in the National Health Service, Social Services, and the private sector.
Other:
- The program is delivered in collaboration with local FE partners.
- The program is not available to international students who require a visa to study in the UK.
- Students are encouraged to complete a clinical visit as part of their application.
- Applicants may be expected to complete a Declaration of Criminal Background or have a full Disclosure Barring Service check.
- Additional support is provided to students who have declared a disability on their UCAS application.
- Hands-on work experience in a healthcare environment can be considered in lieu of one GCSE (excluding science).
