Foundation to Human and Animal Health Professions (Medicine) (Year 0)
Program Overview
This foundation year program prepares mature students for entry into the Medicine and Surgery MBChB programme. It provides essential skills and knowledge in biology, chemistry, professional studies, and health and social care, through a blend of traditional and technology-enhanced teaching methods. Students gain practical experience through laboratory sessions, OSCEs, and clinical skills workshops, equipping them for a career in medicine.

Degree Overview:
This is a year zero foundation programme designed for mature students who have typically been out of formal education for some time or who have taken non-traditional qualifications. It leads to access onto a Medicine and Surgery MBChB programme.
Objectives:
- Develop skills needed for independent study at undergraduate degree level.
- Introduce students to a variety of learning methods and assessment tasks.
- Provide a breadth of patient-focused practical experience in a region with a particularly diverse population.
- Equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours to safely and ethically practice medicine.
- Ensure students meet the core requirements set out by the General Medical Council.
- Foster lifelong learning and commitment to professional development.
- Course Schedule: The course is delivered over two semesters.
- Modules: It is delivered through a blended approach using small group e-lectures, e-tutorials, and on-site laboratory sessions. Assessment includes continuous coursework based on practical laboratory skills and an end-of-semester multiple-choice examination.
- BIOLOGY FOR HEALTH STUDIES 2 (HEAL002): This module builds on the knowledge gained in HEAL001 and explores more complex physiological processes in mammals and some aspects of gross mammalian anatomy. It is delivered through a blended approach using lectures, e-lectures, tutorials, and on-site laboratory sessions. Assessment includes coursework and an end-of-semester written examination. - CHEMISTRY FOR MEDICINE/DENTISTRY 2 (HEAL009): This module builds on HEAL008 and explores more complex chemical interactions. It is delivered through a blended approach using lectures, e-lectures, tutorials, and on-site laboratory sessions. Assessment includes on-going coursework based on laboratory tasks and an end-of-semester unseen written examination. It also supports the development of study skills. It is delivered through interactive lectures, small group discussions, seminars, and practical sessions. Assessment includes a reflective portfolio and an assessed presentation.
- HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE FOR MEDICINE/DENTISTRY (HEAL010): This module explores the biological, psychological, environmental, and ethical factors that influence health. It is delivered through interactive lectures and e-lectures. Assessment includes coursework and a presentation.
Assessment:
- Formative Assessment: This includes quizzes, anatomy spotters, and formative Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).
- Summative Assessment: This takes place at the end of each year and includes written papers and practical exams in the form of OSCEs and LOCAS. This includes interactive and didactic lecturing, case-based learning, small group teaching, clinical skills and simulation workshops, Human Anatomy Resource Centre (HARC) sessions, communication skills practicals, and a staged programme of research skills development.
