Degree Overview:
The Child Health PhD/MPhil/MD program at the University of Liverpool is a research-focused program that offers students the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in a variety of areas related to child health. The program is based in the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, which is internationally renowned for its research in obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology, and medical and surgical paediatrics. The program is housed in a vibrant new state-of-the-art Institute in the Park at Alder Hey, which provides students with access to outstanding laboratory facilities.
Objectives:
The program aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct independent research in child health. Students will develop a deep understanding of their chosen research area, learn how to design and conduct research studies, and develop their critical thinking and communication skills.
Program Description:
The Child Health PhD/MPhil/MD program is a highly competitive program that attracts students from around the world. The program is designed to be flexible, allowing students to tailor their research to their specific interests. Students can choose to focus on a particular area of child health, such as paediatric respiratory and cystic fibrosis, paediatric rheumatology, paediatric pharmacology, neonatal medicine, paediatric neurodisability and international child health, paediatric surgery, or paediatric nephrology.

- The program is based at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, a new £280M facility opened in 2015 with a catchment area of 7.5 million and more than 275,000 episodes of care per annum including 65,000 children seen in the A&E department.
- The recently renewed £2M funding to support the NIHR Alder Hey Clinical Research Facility (CRF) for Experimental Medicine serves as a hub for conducting experimental medicine/ early phase/ late phase clinical trials/ studies in neonates and children to ensure that Liverpool is a key UK and European player for drug development in paediatrics.

- Please note that if you are undertaking a PhD within the Faculty of Science and Engineering the fee you pay, Band A or Band B, will reflect the nature of your research project. Some research projects incur a higher fee than others e.g. if you are required to undertake laboratory work. You will be informed of the fee for your programme in your offer letter. ^ Self-funded, full-time international students studying a PhD programme classified as Band A will receive a £2,000 reduction in their fees for the first year only.
