The University of Liverpool has a long history of studying the ancient world, dating back to 1881. The Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology is internationally renowned for its interdisciplinary research, spanning from the origins of humanity to the cultures and languages of late antiquity. The PhD/MPhil in Classics and Ancient History focuses on the study of ancient Greek and Roman societies, cultures, politics, philosophy, economy, religion, medicine, and literature. It also explores the reception of Classical antiquity in the modern world. The program offers a diverse range of research areas, including:

- The politics, economy, and administration of ancient Rome
- Receptions of Classical antiquity in the modern world
- Ancient economies (with a strong interdisciplinary research cluster combining expertise from Classics & Ancient History and Archaeology) The program encourages students to ask fundamental questions, challenge established narratives, and be innovative in their investigations of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

- The department has 42 academic and research staff and over 60 postgraduate researchers, making it one of the largest hubs for the academic study of the human past in the UK.
- The program offers a dedicated IT suite for Digital Humanities research, including digital mapping, image analysis, photogrammetry, and reconstructions.
- Students have access to the Garstang Museum of Archaeology, which houses outstanding archaeological collections from important Classical sites.

Entry Requirements:
Applications are welcome from suitably qualified candidates who wish to undertake research leading to a PhD in Classics and Ancient History on either a full- or part-time basis. We ordinarily expect candidates for entry to our PhD programme to hold a first degree in the First or 2:1 class and a Master’s degree (preferably pass of 65% or higher) in a relevant subject area from a UK university, or EU/overseas qualifications of an equivalent standard.
