Program Overview
The University of Liverpool Division of Psychiatry offers supervision for postgraduate research degrees in specific fields of interest within psychiatry. The Division has highly active, renowned research groups and offers research supervision leading to MPhil, PhD, and MD degrees. Current research themes include general and adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and old age psychiatry. Students engage in a seminar program and may attend conferences as part of their training.

Degree Overview:
The University of Liverpool Division of Psychiatry offers supervision for postgraduate students who wish to undertake research degrees in specific fields of interest. The Division cannot provide funding support for research degrees unless specific arrangements are made with lead supervisors or the student applies through competitive and advertised posts.
Objectives:
The aims of the new research group are:
- To make a significant contribution to a better understanding and treatment of people with mental illness who have complex needs.
- To significantly contribute to mental health services research.
- To be a leading centre in translational research in mental health.
Description:
The University of Liverpool Division of Psychiatry provides supervision for postgraduate students who wish to undertake research degrees in specific fields of interest. The Division has highly active, internationally renowned research groups, and in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), 80% of their research activity was rated as of international standard.
Other:
- Students undertaking postgraduate degrees will be engaged in a busy seminar programme, being expected to play a part through presentation, and attending appropriate conferences.
- Research supervision leading to the degrees of MPhil, PhD and MD is offered.
- There are several outstanding research themes within Psychiatry.
- General and Adult Psychiatry: "social inclusion and exclusion of people with severe mental illness"
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Professor Gowers is undertaking a Department of Health funded multi-centre trial on cognitive behaviour therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa. He leads an international collaboration to develop and field test the Health of the Nation outcome scales for children and adolescents.
- Old Age Psychiatry: Professor Wilson has undertaken Cochrane reviews of interventions in the treatment of depression in older people. This work is complemented by publications of randomised controlled trials in long term treatment of depression and he is currently engaged in HTA funded study of RCT of antidepressant treatment in depressed patients with dementia.

You will be notified of any fee which may apply in your offer letter.
- Please note that if you are undertaking a PhD within the Faculty of Science and Engineering the fee you pay, Band A or Band B, will reflect the nature of your research project. Some research projects incur a higher fee than others e.g. if you are required to undertake laboratory work. You will be informed of the fee for your programme in your offer letter. ^ Self-funded, full-time international students studying a PhD programme classified as Band A will receive a £2,000 reduction in their fees for the first year only.
