Led by world-renowned researchers, it equips students with cutting-edge theory, research techniques, and transferable skills for careers in academia or research institutions. The program fosters strong collaborations with industry and charitable organizations to address real-world environmental issues.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Environmental Science PhD/MPhil program is a multi-disciplinary research program that combines aspects of community ecology, animal behavior, conservation biology, ecosystem management, and food web ecology in marine and terrestrial systems. It is led by the Ecology and Marine Biology group at the University of Liverpool.

Objectives:

The program aims to produce researchers who are internationally recognized in their own fields and understand current environmental and academic research problems. It also aims to equip students with strong, transferable research skills.

Description:

The program brings together world-leading researchers from the University of Liverpool and collaborators across industry, charitable organizations, and other research institutes. The research combines cutting-edge theory with a strong focus on real-world issues such as conservation and climate change. The program employs field, experimental, analytical, and modeling techniques to answer fundamental and pressing research questions.

Teaching:

Students develop their research skills primarily by completing a project under supervision. These skills include:

  • Data collection and management
  • Data interpretation and modeling
  • Critical analysis
  • Analysis and discussion of literature
  • Presentation skills, through international conferences
  • Paper writing skills, through writing manuscripts
  • Students are encouraged and trained to publish academic papers. It is not unusual for students to complete their PhD program with 2-3 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Other:

The program offers state-of-the-art research facilities that enable experimental studies, mass spectroscopy, microscopy, and the development of new technologies. The program also has well-established field sites around the world, from the tropics to the poles. The group is ideally placed to support a wide range of PhD projects. The program combines expertise in a broad range of subject areas to provide an integrated degree program. The mixed skill set ensures graduates have a range of specific and transferable skills. Training high-quality postgraduate researchers is a key priority, and the success of past students evidences this.
