The Music Management MA is a postgraduate program designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in the music industry. Outline:

The Music Management MA is a 12-month full-time program consisting of six modules, three in each semester, totaling 120 credits. It includes guest speakers from the classical music sector.

  • Researching the Music Industry (MUSI510): This module examines interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the music industries and explores how research in the field is conducted.
  • Students learn how to plan and develop a research project in preparation for their dissertation.

Semester Two:

  • CLASSICAL MUSIC: INDUSTRY AND SOCIAL CONTEXTS (MUSI543): This module builds upon the first semester's "Managing Music Making" module and delves deeper into the activities and challenges faced by professionals in the classical music sector.
  • It expands beyond symphony orchestras to include recording and broadcasting, composition and publishing, soloists and agents, and small ensemble and vocal music.
  • MUSIC CONTRACTS (MUSI516): This module explores key agreements between musicians and music companies, focusing on contracts related to publishing and recording rights.
  • It also examines agreements between musicians and managers, live agents, venues, and promoters.
  • WORK PLACEMENT (MUSI542): This module involves students completing a work placement in the music industry.
  • They shadow music professionals and learn about managing various departments within a music organization. Students are assessed through a portfolio and presentation reflecting on their experiences.

Final Project:

  • DISSERTATION (MUSI524): This module requires students to conduct in-depth research on a chosen topic related to the classical music business.
  • It aims to deepen their knowledge, develop research and writing skills, and enhance their ability to present extended arguments.

Assessment:

Students are assessed through coursework, typically two pieces per module. Assessment methods vary widely, including group presentations, portfolios, essays, and a dissertation.


Teaching:
