Program Overview
Trinity College Dublin's Geography and Geoscience program offers a comprehensive understanding of the Earth system and human-environment interactions. Through a foundation stage and specialization in Geography or Geoscience, students develop analytical and interpretive skills for environmental data. The program emphasizes sustainability and environmental management, preparing graduates for careers in environmental consulting, science, and education.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
The Geography and Geoscience program at Trinity College Dublin is a four-year, full-time program that leads to a B.A. (Moderatorship) Honours Bachelor Degree (NFQ Level 8). The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Earth system and the human-environment interactions that shape it. Students will learn about the physical, chemical, biological, and social processes that have shaped the Earth over time, and they will develop the skills necessary to analyze and interpret environmental data. The program also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and environmental management, and students will learn how to apply their knowledge to real-world problems.
Outline:
The Geography and Geoscience program is divided into two parts: a two-year foundation stage and a two-year specialization stage. During the foundation stage, students will take courses in a variety of disciplines, including physical geography, human geography, geology, and environmental science. These courses will provide students with a broad understanding of the Earth system and the human-environment interactions that shape it. During the specialization stage, students will choose one of the following specializations:
- Geography: This specialization focuses on the human-environment interactions that shape the Earth's surface. Students will learn about the physical, social, and economic factors that influence human settlement patterns, land use, and environmental change.
- Geoscience: This specialization focuses on the physical processes that have shaped the Earth over time. Students will learn about the Earth's structure, composition, and history, and they will develop the skills necessary to analyze and interpret geological data.
Assessment:
Students in the Geography and Geoscience program are assessed through a variety of methods, including:
- Exams: Students will take exams at the end of each semester to assess their understanding of the course material.
- Essays: Students will write essays throughout the program to demonstrate their ability to analyze and interpret environmental data.
- Presentations: Students will give presentations to their classmates to share their research findings.
- Fieldwork: Students will participate in fieldwork to collect data and observe environmental processes firsthand.
Teaching:
The Geography and Geoscience program is taught by a team of experienced faculty members who are actively involved in research. The faculty members use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, and field trips. The program also emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning, and students will have the opportunity to participate in research projects and fieldwork.
Careers:
Graduates of the Geography and Geoscience program are well-prepared for a variety of careers in the environmental field. They can work as environmental consultants, environmental scientists, geographers, geologists, and teachers. They can also work in government agencies, non-profit organizations, and the private sector.
Other:
The Geography and Geoscience program is a member of the European Geography Association (EUGEO) and the International Geographical Union (IGU). The program is also accredited by the Royal Irish Academy.
