Program Outline
Degree Overview:
Engineering with Management is a five-year, full-time program that leads to a B.Sc. (Ing) Honours Bachelor Degree (NFQ Level 8) or an optional M.A.I. Degree (NFQ Level 9). The program aims to develop both the technical and business aspects of engineering, equipping graduates with the skills to solve problems, design and manage systems, and innovate in the field.
Outline:
The program is structured around four main themes: Engineering Fundamentals, Business and Management, Design and Manufacturing Engineering. Approximately 80% of the syllabus comprises engineering subjects such as design, automation, computer simulation/modelling, bio-engineering, and materials. The remaining 20% comprises management subjects such as marketing, finance, quality systems, supply chain management, and human resources management.
Assessment:
A variety of assessment techniques are used throughout the program, including traditional examinations, continuous assessment, project work, and design portfolios.
Teaching:
The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, and project work. The class size is capped at 30 students, allowing for small-group teaching and hands-on exercises. The program is taught by a team of experienced faculty members who are actively involved in research and industry.
Careers:
Graduates of the program are well-suited for jobs in the high-tech sector (such as computer, aerospace, pharmaceutical, medical devices, or electronic) as well as traditional manufacturing (such as design, fabrication, or assembly). They often work as project managers on teams with design and test engineers, managers, financial controllers, marketing and sales people. The qualification is also well suited to those who wish to pursue careers in project management and management consultancy as well as in the broader business and financial sectors.
Other:
- The program is accredited by Engineers Ireland.
- Students have the opportunity to study abroad and participate in team projects with students from other universities.
- The program includes a strong emphasis on group projects, case studies, and teamwork.
- Students in the fourth year can choose to pursue a Bachelor's degree (B.Sc. (Ing)) or a Master's degree (M.A.I), depending on their academic performance.
- Students who choose to pursue a Master's degree can participate in a dual Masters pathway program with Columbia University, leading to the award of a professionally-accredited MAI degree by Trinity Engineering and an MS degree by Columbia.
