Degree Overview:

The Diploma in Arbitration focuses on domestic arbitration in Ireland. It aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge of Irish law and procedure to conduct or participate in arbitrations between Irish parties. A key feature of the program is the Award Writing component, which provides a foundation in constructing and analyzing reasoned arbitral awards. The program also offers valuable background knowledge for those who act as expert witnesses in their professions or trades and are consulted for giving evidence in court or at arbitrations.

Outline:

The Diploma in Arbitration is delivered through lectures and seminars over an academic year. Lectures are held once a week during semester 1, supplemented by six or seven Saturday seminars in semester 2. These seminars are led by practicing arbitrators and include arbitration events. The Saturday seminars are mandatory and typically held fortnightly. For non-lawyers, additional evening lectures on Irish Law and Legal Procedure are held once a week throughout the course, starting in semester 1. The annual course begins in September.

Teaching:

The program is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars. The Saturday seminars are a mandatory part of the course and are led by practicing arbitrators.

Careers:

The program is designed for professionals who come into contact with arbitration. Students are expected to have either a legal qualification or a qualification or experience in a professional practice such as accountancy, architecture, engineering, etc., where arbitration is frequently encountered.
