Program Overview


This dual degree program (BCL/Maîtrise) offers students the unique opportunity to acquire legal qualifications in both Ireland and France, gaining a comprehensive understanding of both Irish and French law. The program equips students for professional legal careers in Ireland, France, and beyond, preparing them for further postgraduate study in EU law. Graduates are well-equipped for careers as lawyers/linguists due to their fluency in French and knowledge of the French legal system.

Degree Overview:

This dual degree program, BCL/Maitrise (LWS3), offers students the opportunity to acquire legal qualifications in both Ireland and France. The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both Irish and French law, equipping them for professional legal careers in Ireland and beyond.


Objectives:

  • To gain an equally good knowledge of Irish and French law within the same program.
  • To prepare students for professional training as lawyers in Ireland and elsewhere.
  • To provide knowledge, skills, and experience applicable in a wide variety of careers.
  • To develop students' understanding of two cultures and two of the world's most important legal systems - the Common Law and Civil Law.
  • To foster active, motivated, and autonomous learners.
  • To encourage students to work individually and as part of a team, developing leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.

Outline:


Structure:

  • The program spans four stages, with the first two stages (Stages 1 & 2) taking place at UCD and the final two stages (Stages 3 & 4) at the University of Panthéon-Assas (Paris II).
  • Students spend two years at UCD studying for the BCL and two years at Paris II studying for the Maîtrise.

Course Schedule:

  • Stages 1 & 2: Students study the standard range of legal subjects required for the BCL, including French Public Law and French Private Law.
