Program Overview


The ProfCert Breastfeeding & Lactation is a graduate-level program designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in breastfeeding and lactation. Delivered in a blended learning format, the program combines online learning with in-person workshops, preparing students for the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) examination. Upon completion, students will gain expertise in breastfeeding science, management of breastfeeding challenges, and ethical and legal issues related to the breastfeeding dyad.

Degree Overview:

The ProfCert Breastfeeding & Lactation is a graduate-level program (level 9 NQF, 10 credits) designed to enhance the breastfeeding and lactation knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals. It serves as a preparatory program for individuals with relevant clinical lactation experience who wish to take the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) examination.


Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Interpret the science of breastfeeding and its role in maternal and infant health.
  • Critically discuss the psychological, social, and cultural factors influencing breastfeeding practices.
  • Differentiate and provide management strategies for breastfeeding challenges.
  • Describe how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted in relation to the lactating woman.
  • Critically discuss the Baby Friendly Health Initiative nationally and internationally.
  • Outline the ethical and legal issues relevant to the breastfeeding dyad.

Teaching:

The program is delivered in a blended learning format, combining online learning and in-person workshops.

  • Online Learning: Facilitated through the UCD virtual learning platform "Brightspace."
  • Subject matter experts interact with students during these workshops. Learners are challenged to apply their learning in practice.

Other:

  • The program is part-time, running from January to May.
  • The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has approved the program.
