Program Outline
- Clinical Decision-Making: Applying clinical decision-making skills in relation to referring persons for medical radiological and other imaging procedures within their scope of practice.
- Communication Skills: Demonstrating effective communication skills and knowledge of the role of the multidisciplinary team management involved for the safe and appropriate use of medical radiological procedures and other imaging procedures.
- Referral Process: Understanding the role of the practitioner in the referral process.
- Person and Practitioner Safety: Demonstrating knowledge of person and practitioner safety in the context of radiological procedures.
Program Structure:
The program is delivered in a blended format, combining online lectures and supervised clinical practice. There are three program options:
Course Schedule:
The program is delivered over a 12-week period (September - December). All lectures are delivered live online.
- Clinical Practicum Referring for Radiological Procedures: This module is delivered over a 12-week period and involves 100 hours of supervised practice by a designated medical practitioner in the area in which the student is employed. Students complete ten referral for radiological procedure case studies under the supervision of the medical practitioner. Each case is logged in the student's clinical portfolio of evidence as a demonstration of competence.

- Clinical Portfolio: Students are required to maintain a clinical portfolio of evidence, which includes documentation of their supervised clinical practice and case studies.
- Clinical Skills: Demonstrating competence in applying clinical decision-making skills and performing the necessary assessments and consultations for referring for radiological procedures.
- Communication Skills: Demonstrating effective communication skills in the context of referring for radiological procedures.
- Professionalism: Adhering to professional standards and ethical guidelines.

The program is delivered by lecturers from the UCD School of Medicine - Department of Radiography and Diagnostic Imaging in collaboration with UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems.

Potential Career Paths:
- Registered Nurse: The program enhances the skills and knowledge of Registered Nurses, enabling them to refer for radiological procedures within their scope of practice.
- Site Declaration Form: Applicants must complete a Site Declaration Form, signed by the Director of Nursing, Clinical Medical Supervisor, and Head of Radiology (Consultant Radiologist), agreeing to provide support and clinical supervision towards the achievement of the required competencies for the duration of the program.
- HSE Funding: If HSE funded, applicants must apply and secure funding approval prior to applying to UCD.
- English Language Proficiency: Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language.
- Limited Places: There are a limited number of places available on this program.
