Degree Overview:

This program is a Professional Certificate in Primary Care (Sports Medicine) designed for healthcare professionals who work with sports participants, from amateur to elite levels. It is a 15-credit program aimed at professionals like Doctors, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Athletic and Allied therapists. The program focuses on the role of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in managing sports participants, particularly in non-emergency settings.


Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the MDT's role in the sporting environment, including prescriptive practice.
  • Perform clinical assessments for musculoskeletal presentations in the sporting environment.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of common medical conditions in the sporting population.
  • Demonstrate the skills needed to screen athletes for participation in activity or competition.
  • Demonstrate critical appraisal skills of modalities that can affect recovery and return to play.
  • Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of factors that affect special groups and their continued participation in sports.

Teaching:

  • Content delivery is through presentations and pre-recorded materials delivered online via UCD's Brightspace platform.
  • Material is made available on a weekly basis.
  • Live webinars take place on alternate weeks, delivered by professionals who work with sports participants from the community to elite level.
  • Two practical and in-person workshops run during the Trimester, allowing students to meet and interact with academic staff and develop practical skills needed to operate in the sporting environment.

  • This course complements the learning provided by the Professional Certificate in Emergencies in Sports and Exercise Medicine (X938).
  • Prospective students may be interested in progressing to a Masters level qualification within the current postgraduate framework with UCD.
