Program Overview


This part-time online program combines structured online learning with residential events. It prepares students for careers in football medicine, ranging from grassroots to elite levels. Students benefit from the expertise of Bath University academics and FIFA's industry insights. Upon completion, graduates are qualified to work with football teams and organizations in various football medicine roles.

Program Outline


Outline:

This course combines residential events with in-depth and structured online learning facilitated by academic staff who are experts in their subject areas. Induction Attendance at our two-day in-person induction (12 to 13 September 2024) is optional. This will take place on the University of Bath campus. Residential Weeks Attendance at the January 2025 and January 2026 Residential Weeks (27 to 31 January 2025 and 26 to 30 January 2026) is compulsory. These will take place on the University of Bath campus. Semester 1 Sports Science Residential Week During the Sports Science Residential Week, you will receive face-to-face teaching to complement your distance learning study. Semester 2 FIFA residential During the FIFA residential, you will visit FIFA’s medical facilities in Zurich, Switzerland, and attend lectures and seminars delivered by FIFA medical experts. Bath You will use the university’s online learning environment, Blackboard, to access study materials, participate in online discussions, submit assignments and receive feedback from Bath academics throughout your studies. Units Applied football medicine Exercise behaviour change for population health Football medicine in practice I Football medicine in practice II Foundations of biomechanics and physiology for clinicians Psychology of sports medicine Research project The sport and exercise doctor


Assessment:

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.


Teaching:

You are expected to spend, on average, around 10 hours per week studying. This will be made up of structured and interactive online content, with a self-directed focus. You will have access to support from Bath academics throughout your studies. During Residential Weeks, you will experience face-to-face teaching to complement your distance learning study.


Careers:

By the end of your studies, you will be qualified to work with footballers and/or teams from grassroots to elite levels in a variety of football medicine roles (such as team doctor). Throughout the course, you’ll become better equipped to assess, treat, and advise the patients in your care. Admission Requirements

You should be a qualified medical doctor with full unrestricted registration with the General Medical Council or your country's relevant body. You should also have a minimum of one year’s work experience as a qualified and registered doctor before enrolment. Please ensure that you submit a personal statement of 250-500 words that outlines your qualifications and experience, your interest in the programme, and how you wish to use the degree after completion. As this is a practice-based course, please include details of your access to patients with sporting injuries and/or conditions where exercise could be prescribed as medicine. If you are a qualified physiotherapist, but not a medical doctor, then this course is not suitable.


Language Proficiency Requirements:

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any element TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components
