About Program

Program Overview

The SAMBa PhD program cultivates fearless problem-solvers with expertise in mathematical modelling, bridging abstraction and data-driven approaches. Through collaborative research, students tackle challenges in areas like machine learning, optimization, and high-dimensional statistics, fostering interdisciplinary innovation and career success in academia or industry.

Program Outline

Outline:

  • The SAMBa PhD program offers a 4-year curriculum, including initial training to develop breadth of knowledge and research skills.
  • Students can either pursue an industry co-designed PhD project, or a project formulated with an academic supervisor during the training phase.
  • The program includes a diverse cohort of researchers in an inclusive environment who explore mathematical modelling, inspired by real world phenomena, both in abstraction and incorporating data.
  • Research spectrum includes rapidly developing areas of mathematical sciences including, machine learning, uncertainty quantification, optimisation, high-dimensional statistics and numerical stochastic modelling.

Assessment:

  • The taught elements of the initial training phase include units that are assessed using coursework and examinations (both oral and written).
  • Students are required to reach a pass mark of 60% to progress onto their research phase.
  • During the research phase, students carry out supervised research in their chosen subject which must then be written up as a substantial thesis.
  • This usually takes place 12 months after the start of the research phase.
  • The final stage of the PhD is submission of the thesis and the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.

Careers:

  • Alumni are now working successfully in academia and industry.

Other:

  • SAMBa supports multidisciplinary mathematical PhD research, often in collaboration with external partners.
  • Postgraduate researchers undertake a four-year integrated programme of research in a world-class environment with opportunities to work flexibly across disciplines.
  • They are trained to become fearless in formulating large-scale challenges in the language of statistical applied mathematics and become leading problem solvers.
  • Professional development is a crucial element of doctoral study, not only in supporting your research but also as part of your longer term career development.
