Program Overview
This Associate Degree program in Secondary Education prepares students for further study and future teaching careers. Students specialize in a specific content area and gain foundational knowledge in human and social factors in education, while developing essential skills such as communication, empathy, and collaboration. The program requires school volunteering and a background check, and prepares graduates for roles as teacher assistants or child care workers with a Bachelor's Degree opening up additional career options.

Degree Overview:
Secondary educators teach students in grades 7-12. They guide students to delve deeply into a particular academic content area, while supporting social and civic engagement. Secondary Education majors specialize in a specific content area such as chemistry, biology, English language arts or social studies. As an aspiring secondary teacher, this program will help you to understand the complex human and social factors involved in educating students, as well as practices that support diversity and lifelong learning. A bachelor’s degree in education is the minimum requirement to become a teacher. As an associate degree program, UC Clermont offers freshman and sophomore coursework with the expectation that students will transfer to either UC Clifton or Northern Kentucky University to complete their preparation and earn a bachelor’s degree.

Other:
- Education majors are required to volunteer in local schools, typically between 10-20 hours per semester, in conjunction with their coursework.
- An annual background check is also required (approximately $60).
- You must have a strong ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students, as well as understand their academic, social, and emotional needs.
