Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Translation & Translation Studies certificate is an interdisciplinary program that draws from various departments like English, Romance & Arabic Languages & Literatures (RALL), German, Asian, and Judaic Studies. It is designed to be a professionalizing complement to existing Master's and doctoral programs. The program is open to all graduate students admitted to a UC program, particularly those in Nursing, Medical Studies, and those preparing to work in the healthcare industry who might benefit from bilingual and pre-professional translation expertise.

Careers:

There is a growing demand for translators in both the public and private sectors, including the medical field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 19% growth in employment for interpreters and translators from 2018 to 2028. The Cincinnati metropolitan area is experiencing growth in Spanish- and French-speaking communities, leading to an increased need for translators in businesses, hospitals, public schools, and manufacturers.

Other:

The program is open to students on both West and East campuses. Faculty members in RALL teach Medical Spanish and have contacts with Nursing faculty and students. The Certificate Director will work with students to discuss options, exceptions, and possible substitutions as needed. All exceptions and substitutions must be approved by the Certificate Director. The University of Cincinnati has a long tradition of renowned programs in languages and creative writing, which the certificate draws upon. The departments frequently host speakers and writers to provide workshops for graduate students.
