Program Overview
The University of Cincinnati's Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education prepares graduates to become licensed teachers in English/Language Arts for grades 7-12. Students specialize in critical literacies, reading comprehension, and the production and consumption of digital texts, focusing on culturally sustaining and contemporary issue-based literacy instruction. Graduates typically teach in Ohio or across the nation and are committed to social justice and addressing issues of diversity with equity.
Program Outline
Students in our program gain experience teaching in urban and diverse school settings and using research-based teaching practices to meet the needs of all learners in their classes. At the secondary level, graduates specialize in one core disciplinary subject: Integrated English/Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Integrated Science, or Physics. An Integrated English/Language Arts license prepares students to teach all subject areas related to English language arts in grades 7-12 in Ohio schools. Students will complete course work that substantively engages in topics related to critical literacies, reading comprehension, composition, canonical and young adult literature, and the production and consumption of digital texts. All students will be prepared to plan and lead literacy instruction that is culturally sustaining and critically engaged in contemporary issues.
