The diverse field offers rewarding opportunities for those with strong reasoning skills and the drive to solve challenging problems.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
Mathematical sciences include the disciplines of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. Mathematicians and statisticians use representations of abstract ideas and relationships to solve problems in order to arrive at a general understanding of how these representations work, as well as how they could be applied. Mathematical sciences students learn complex analytical and problem-solving skills while exploring a range of mathematical topics and problems.
Careers:
The field of mathematical sciences is quite diverse, so success factors tend to vary. Certainly, good reasoning skills and logical thinking, along with the ability to communicate abstract concepts are important. Mathematicians enjoy challenging problems and find it difficult to stop working on a problem until they arrive at a satisfactory solution.
Other:
Students in the UC College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) enjoy many benefits afforded through study at a research-intensive institution ranked among the nation's top 25 public research universities.
