Railway Systems Engineering and Integration MSc
Program Overview
The MSc Railway Systems Engineering and Integration program at the University of Birmingham Dubai equips graduates with advanced knowledge and skills in designing, building, operating, and managing railway systems. Through a comprehensive curriculum taught by industry experts, students gain insights into subsystems interactions, systems integration, and multidisciplinary project management. The program prepares individuals for leadership roles in the global railway sector, enabling them to address the challenges of modernizing and developing complex railway systems.
Program Outline
It equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to become industry leaders in designing, building, operating, and managing sophisticated railway subsystems and complex interfaces. The program emphasizes developing postgraduate students' railway engineering knowledge, systems integration skills, and understanding of the complex interactions between subsystems. It also fosters the ability to work in multidisciplinary project teams and is strongly supported by railway practitioners.
Outline:
The full-time program consists of classroom-taught modules and coursework modules, delivered over eight months. Part-time students follow the same syllabus but complete the taught modules at a pace that suits their work commitments. The MSc strand requires the submission of a dissertation based on independent research.
Modules:
- Advanced Project – 60 credits
- Business and People Management - 20 credits
- Electrification and Traction Systems - 20 credits
- Infrastructure and Rolling Stock Systems - 20 credits
- Railway Control and Digital Systems - 20 credits
- Railway Operations, Management and Planning - 20 credits
- Systems Engineering and Ergonomics - 20 credits
Course Delivery:
The program offers a combination of evening and weekend classes designed to accommodate working professionals and full-time students. Full-time students attend classes on weekday evenings from 18:00-21:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00-18:00. All modules are block-taught in weeklong intensives. Part-time students study during these hours based on the number of modules they choose.
Teaching:
The program is taught by experts in railway engineering and systems, ensuring students receive instruction at the leading edge of their fields. Each taught module includes classroom lectures, tutorials, team exercises, visits, and assignments to reinforce and integrate the subject matter.
Careers:
Graduates of the program are well-prepared for senior positions in the railway industry worldwide. They are equipped to design, build, operate, and manage sophisticated railway subsystems and complex interfaces in existing and new railways.
Other:
- The program is subject to Ministry of Education Accreditation.
- The University of Birmingham is Europe's largest and most diverse railway research and education group with extensive links to industry.
- Many participants are experienced railway engineers and managers sponsored by their employers.
- The program allows new entrants to the railway industry to familiarize themselves with the specialist disciplines involved in railway systems engineering and gain insight into the complex interactions between subsystems.
- The program helps students work at a more senior level on major projects and understand when technical experts may not fully appreciate the interfaces with other disciplines and the potential problems that can arise.
