Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Engineering BEng degree program at the University of Birmingham is designed to provide students with a flexible and stimulating learning experience. It allows students to explore various engineering topics before specializing in their area of interest. The program emphasizes modern engineering practices, which require collaborative working across traditional boundaries. Students will learn essential skills needed to operate as engineers in any discipline, working with peers from other engineering branches to discover how their unique interests and skills can work together to produce better solutions. The program aims to develop students' knowledge, skills, and confidence to shape their future.

Outline:

The Engineering BEng program is structured as follows:

  • Year 1: A shared first year across all engineering disciplines, focusing on fundamental skills.
  • Modules include:
  • Electrical Engineering 1: Covers the fundamentals of electronic and electrical engineering, including analogue circuits, digital systems, and electrical power and machinery systems.
  • Engineering Mathematics 1: Enhances students' knowledge and understanding of mathematics used in engineering.
  • Fluid Mechanics and Energy Transfer: Introduces the fundamentals of fluid mechanics and energy conservation, and their engineering applications.
  • Integrated Design Project 1A & 1B: Introduces students to the design process and skills employed within an engineering context.
  • Years 2 and 3: Students specialize in one of the following engineering departments:
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Teaching:

The program is taught in a new state-of-the-art School of Engineering building, which includes a Design Centre and flexible learning spaces. Students benefit from world-leading research activity in the School of Engineering, learning from global experts in their fields.

Careers:

The Engineering BEng degree opens up a wide range of career opportunities, both at home and abroad. The specific career path will be influenced by the chosen engineering discipline. Students can find more information about potential career paths on the employability tab of the individual engineering department pages.
