Evidence Based Cardiorespiratory Practice - Postgraduate Module
Program Overview
This physiotherapy module focuses on cardiovascular and respiratory care, providing students with a solid knowledge base and practical skills. Through simulation and critical analysis, students develop evidence-based practice, prioritize patient-centered care, and explore strategies for prevention and self-management to enhance client autonomy and well-being. The module includes both practical assessments and a written case commentary, with contributions from experienced academics Dr. Carolyn Roskell and Mr. Clive Liles.

Degree Overview:
This module is designed to prepare students for safe, effective and ethical practice within the field of cardiovascular and respiratory physiotherapy. A key feature of the module will be the development of a clinically relevant knowledge base which will be challenged through critical analysis to develop a sound framework for the practice of evidence-based practice within cardiovascular and respiratory physiotherapy. Practical and workshop sessions including the use of hi-fidelity simulation will where students will be provided with opportunities to develop insights into the impact of living with cardiorespiratory conditions as a means of helping them to make decisions in partnership with clients, carers, health professionals, stakeholders and others to enhance their health and well-being. This will include consideration of prevention, education, self-management and lifestyle change as strategies to promote client autonomy. promote acquisition of relevant assessment and treatment skills centred on the principles of clinical effectiveness. Evaluation of interventions through critical reflection and evaluation of treatment outcomes will be strongly emphasised to enhance the basis for reasoning and decision-making. A client-centred view will be encouraged where students will be provided with opportunities to develop insights into the impact of living with cardiorespiratory conditions as a means of helping them to make decisions in partnership with clients, carers, health professionals, stakeholders and others to enhance their health and well-being.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the normal structure and functioning of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- Discuss consequences of disruptions to normal structure and function as a result of pathology, injury and ageing
- Demonstrate practical knowledge of key skills appropriate for assessing and managing patients with cardiovascular and respiratory dysfunctions, with due regard for safety, legal and ethical issues
- Critically evaluate methods used to assess and manage cardiovascular and respiratory dysfunctions
- Justify appropriate reasoned decision-making when presented with clinical problems within a framework of evidence-based practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of patients/clients/carers who are affected by cardiovascular and respiratory problems through evidence of patient-centred approach to practice

- OSCE-based practical assessment – 15 mins (40% weighting)
