Master of Arts in Hispanic Literatures and Linguistics

Program Overview

UMass Amherst's MA in Hispanic Literatures and Linguistics enhances language skills and cultural understanding in Spanish or Portuguese. Students concentrate in one or more areas, including Iberian studies, Hispanic linguistics, or translation. The program culminates in an exam or research thesis, preparing graduates for further studies or careers in Hispanic or Lusophone literatures and linguistics. Spanish majors can accelerate their MA completion through a one-year option.

Program Outline

Upon entering the program, students are assigned an advisor based on their area of concentration, which can include Iberian studies, Hispanic linguistics, Latin American and Latinx studies, Portuguese and Brazilian studies, or translation in the Hispanic and Lusophone world. Students also have the option to pursue a double concentration. The program culminates in either an exam or a research thesis, preparing students for further graduate studies or careers in the field.
