The program aims to equip students with skills in project development, research and analysis, interpersonal and cross-cultural communication, critical thinking, and writing. These skills are intended to prepare graduates for addressing complex challenges within communities, the country, and the world. The program begins with introductory courses focusing on the concepts, skills, and tools of modern scholarship, as well as the history, literature, and culture of Black people, spanning from ancient African origins to contemporary life. Students then choose courses that align with their areas of interest, such as history, social science, literature, or the arts. All students complete a senior project under the guidance of a faculty member.
