Program Overview


This independent study program allows students to design their own course with a faculty sponsor. The focus is on qualitative and quantitative enrichment, and students must apply through CHC PATHS by August 15. The application requires a contract proposal that includes the approval of the faculty chair, other reviewers, and the Academic Standards Committee of the Faculty Senate's Commonwealth Honors College Council.

Teaching:

This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study.


Other:

Students must apply through CHC PATHS to add this course. THE STUDENT DEADLINE TO COMPLETE AND SUBMIT THEIR PART OF AN INDEPENDENT STUDY HONORS (396ISH) APPLICATION USING CHC PATHS IS AUGUST 15. Students wishing to register for an Honors Independent Study (396ISH) must complete a contract proposal application with their faculty chair using CHC PATHS (honors.umass.edu/chc-paths/) for online approval by their sponsor and other reviewers, including the Academic Standards Committee of the Faculty Senate's Commonwealth Honors College Council.
