Program Overview
The PhD in German and Scandinavian Studies at UMass Amherst provides flexibility in concentration and coursework, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. Students can complement their studies with graduate certificates in related fields and have access to resources like the DEFA Film Library. Additionally, students holding teaching assistantships participate in a pedagogy workshop to enhance their teaching skills.

Degree Overview:
The PhD in German and Scandinavian Studies program at UMass Amherst offers students flexibility in their choice of concentration and coursework. Students must take at least two classes per semester with GSS faculty, but have a range of other interdisciplinary options in related fields of their choice, to be determined in consultation with the academic advisor. Students can also pursue graduate certificates in complementary fields, such as film studies, African Diaspora, and women, gender, sexuality studies. Students holding a teaching assistantship must enroll every semester in our pedagogy workshop, German 583: Methods of Teaching German, in addition to the regular coursework.
