Outline:

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)/Master of Pharmacy Practice is a vertically integrated coursework degree which will prepare you for professional practice as a pharmacist. The course includes the Pharmacy Board of Australia's intern training program and supervised practice requirements. Over the five years you will develop a comprehensive understanding of how medicines are developed and how medications affect the human body. Graduates will be eligible to apply for general registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia (after successfully completing the examination and other requirements). You will complete a sequence of core units that meet the accreditation requirements for your profession, with a focus on the pharmaceutical and pharmacological properties of medicines, problem solving, clinical decision making, communication, building an evidence base, and delivering person-centred healthcare to a diverse population with a range of medical conditions. In addition to on-campus learning, you will also have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in different practice settings through Work Integrated Learning placements. Honours is integrated into the fourth year of the course and consists of an independent research program supervised by a member of the academic staff.

Other:

This course is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council and is approved by the Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA). We have integrated the PBA’s intern training program and supervised practice requirements into the degree so that you won't need to undertake further supervised practice after you graduate in order to practise pharmacy. However, you will still need to pass the PBA's registration exam and meet the PBA's registration standards to be eligible for general registration.

  • The Bachelor component of the degree has a mandatory Work Integrated Learning program, which includes clinical placements that must be completed as part of the award requirements for the course.
  • The Work Integrated Learning program provides real-life opportunities for students to experience the roles that pharmacists play in contemporary healthcare environments.
  • Clinical placements commence in first year and continue across each year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. By the completion of the Bachelor of Pharmacy course, students will have been exposed to a wide variety of practice settings, including community pharmacy and hospital settings, in a range of different geographical locations where demographically diverse patients access healthcare.
  • In addition to the mandatory Work Integrated Learning program within the Bachelor component of the degree, the Master's component of the degree requires the completion of approved supervised practice hours as determined by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
  • Graduates can then apply for general registration as a pharmacist (after passing the Pharmacy Board of Australia registration examination and meeting the Board's registration standards).
  • Before you can attend a placement in a clinical setting, you need to have certain clinical placement checks and clearances.
  • The checks can be completed after your enrolment in the course.
  • This course requires you to complete the following number of work hours: 35 hours per week over 58 weeks 2030 Total hours
  • Enrolment into the pharmacy program will require that you are registered as a student with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • You may be eligible for the NSW Health Tertiary Health Study Subsidy Program.
