Degree Overview:

Our Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine is a double degree that equips you with the foundational knowledge of science and medicine with the flexibility to explore multiple scientific areas. This course is for anyone who has a knack for critical thinking with a passion for healthcare and medical sciences. If Biology, Physics and Chemistry are subjects that you enjoy, this degree will be truly insightful for you.


Outline:

The Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine is a vertically-integrated combined degree comprising an undergraduate coursework degree that provides a deeper understanding of the scientific fundamentals that underpin medicine, followed by an accredited postgraduate masters-level course in clinical medical training and research. Under the Bachelor of Science, you will complete core units, along with a major from the Science disciplinary pool, and a minor or second major from the disciplinary or shared pools. You will also complete elective units as needed from the disciplinary or shared pools. After successful completion of the undergraduate requirements you will progress to the Doctor of Medicine, wherein you will complete prescribed units within eight vertical themes:

  • basic and clinical sciences
  • clinical skills
  • diagnostics and therapy
  • research, evidence and informatics
  • population health
  • indigenous health; ethics and law
  • professionalism and interprofessional teamwork
  • You will complete a minimum of 2310 hours of practical clinical experience, and in year three you will also complete a research project.

Teaching:

We focus on small group, team-based learning and integrating theory with practice in the MD. Our Doctor of Medicine program increases clinical exposure and immersion throughout your degree in rural and urban settings with integration into medical teams. Students are directly supervised on wards, in clinics and in community settings by experienced clinicians and educators. The entire fourth-year of the MD program acts as a pre-internship, giving students full clinical immersion.

  • Graduates are eligible for registration by medical boards in all Australian states and territories and in New Zealand.
  • One year of internship is required prior to full registration.
  • Most subject areas within the double degree allow you to take part in an international exchange program.
  • These programs enable you to enhance your skills in a language other than English and your knowledge of other societies and cultures.
  • As a student in the Doctor of Medicine, you will have contact with patients and observe aspects of disease throughout your four years of study, with clinical placements at world-renowned institutes, and established elective placement opportunities in Europe, Africa, North America and Asia.
  • You will have access to placement opportunities in both rural and international settings.
  • For example, medical students can apply to undertake a one-year clinical placement in their third or fourth year at our School of Rural Health in Dubbo or Orange.
  • The MD program offers dedicated time to complete a substantial research project in year three over a 14-week period.
  • Students also have the opportunity to develop skills in specific areas (personalised pathways) through elective and selective studies.
